Come join the Central New Hampshire Chapter of NEMBA on Saturday November 3rd at 9 AM to help build a new mountain bike trail on the City's Broken Ground property right in Concord. We will meet just past the Portsmouth Street kiosk on the access road to the water tower.

(located here: 43.228604, -71.495165).

When finished, the new trail will be over 1.25 miles long, so we have our work cut out for us. The trail bed will be laid out, but we'll still need to rake the trail bed as well as bench and berm a few sections. We'll have fire rakes, Rogue Hoes, shovels, and other trail building tools, but we can always use more leaf rakes, spade shovels, and of course volunteers who like to get dirty.

After we finish up between 12 and 1 we'll be hosting a cookout to help thank you for your hard work. Feel free to bring your bikes to try out the new trail.

No major projects on the docket just a laundry list of smaller cleanup and refinement. All trails have been lightly leaf-blown and debris cleared. We also took care of some blow downs and widow makers here and there.

We did some de-rooting on a few turns on Mighty Chicken, should hopefully be running a bit smoother now.

We cleaned and refined the final little descent into a 90 deg turn when heading North on Lost Wall. Tucker immediately set the KOM later that day so it is definitely running faster and smoother again.

We also tried to establish a defined line through the lower rock garden on Salmon Brook. The trail has begun to widen through that location as riders search far and wide for the ideal line. The goal was not to sanitize but to offer a consistent technical line to try and discourage further widening. Hopefully we succeeded.

We had a great turnout for our first Social Ride of 2017. Close to 20 riders came out to roll around Franklin Falls in the early season heat and then have a few burgers, dogs & beverages after. Right up until the black flies claimed the pavilion as their own.

You won't want to miss these this year. They are picking up steam and are always a good time. For next month I will be heading up to NEMBAfest early on the 15th to volunteer so the next social ride will technically be the 4th Thursday in June on the 22nd. Location TBD. Stay tuned!
We got a bit of a late start in Central NH this year but its time to get back to business as usual. We'll be continuing with our 3rd Thursday Social Ride / Gatherings this year. With the 4th Thursday as our rain date.

They seemed to be a hit so to start the season off we will be at Franklin Falls Thursday May 18th. We'll try to meet at 5:30pm and roll by 5:45pm. Food and Beverages kicking off around 7pm or so.

We will also be kicking off the trail work season at Franklin Falls Sunday May 21st. Registration starting around 8am.

Tools will be provided but bringing an extra rake or loppers is always handy. This will primarily be a maintenance day, with cleanup and a few line refinement projects as the main tasks. We will probably work until around 1pm or so.

A small but efficient crew was able to refine and fully scratch in the new 'Winni Connector'. Not sure if that name is official yet but I like it so I'm going to use it. This reroute used an underutilized corner of the park that had a short trail called Connector that was really a here-to-there type trail that wasted tons of terrain.

Winni Connector is a .75 mile winding trail that fully uses the Southwest corner of the park taking in as many of the available natural features that we could manage. The trail starts at the same entrance as Sunset off the lower fireroad by the lake. It winds back and forth until ultimately popping out by Backbone and the offshoot of the fireroad that continues to Shore Dr.

There is some flow, some climbing, and some great classic Ahern rock ridge riding. There are some additional A line / B line opportunities around some natural features but we ran out of time for today. So I won't call it 'done' but it is certainly rideable and needs to get some wheels on it so get out there and check it out!

We updated the map for Page Hill with the new extension to Bug Out. You may also notice that Magikal Mystery Tour has disappeared from the map. Very mysterious right?! We're planning a bigger re-route in the near future and it's not getting much attention from riders currently and is getting hard to follow all the way through.

So its on sabbatical for a bit but will return better than ever.

If you want to get involved with its resurrection just holler, more the merrier!
Our first attempt didn't have ideal weather at Franklin Falls but this time around the forecast was in our favor and we got a massive turn out!

Many thanks to all those who came out to ride and hang out afterwards. Next time we'll make sure we have a bit more food but luckily we managed to get everyone at least a little something.

We managed to get lots of wheels on the new Bug Out Ext. and with a bit more refinement work and some more wheels its going to be a great addition to the network.

Next month we'll be at Ahern on Thursday July 21st. Bring your bathing suit, we'll be right on the lake! More details as we get closer.
Many thanks to the 12 or so folks who braved the weather and came out to help build!

Glenn did a great job of getting a lot of the tools and material staged and ready so we were able to hit the ground running. We actually probably got about an hour or so of work completed before the rain really started and maybe another hour or so more that it had a hard time breaking through the canopy.

The main order of the day was building 4 bridges to span streams and wet spots at various locations on the trail. Happy to report that we were able to complete all the bridges needed and Bug Out Ext. is much closer to completion.

The trail is roughed in at this point and arguably rideable although a bit rough and tumble in spots. But the bridges were the hard part and with those in place its just a bit more pruning and refinement work and it will be 100% ready to go.

Now we can all get back up to Hydra without needing to climb the Access Rd. As planned we added a short new section of trail to Stump Trail right before the awkward left hand hairpin turn close to the bottom of the trail.

We built a small berm to bring you back up slope ever so slightly followed by a short steep downhill into a flat section with a few fun little features. We built an up-and-over feature with an existing stump and a blow down that we ripped in half. The new section ends with a fun little knoll into a little berm and then back onto the original trail.
The second reroute was a short little section of Bee Trail. We diverted around the short little steep climb that has turned into a blown out rooty mess and cut across the slope a bit with a more sustainable bench cut.
It rained before and after we rode but we ended up getting a great window of super fun greasy riding on a nice cool evening with no bugs. I'll take that any day. We met a rider new to the area, welcome aboard Heather! and even bumped into a trail runner who met back up with us in the parking lot looking to get info to join up with us on future events. Not bad for an evenings work of bikes and beers.
Hopefully in the future we'll get slightly better weather but I think doing our rides this way is going to work out better for us in the long run. Keep your eyes peeled for our June event, I'll announce that soon. The 3rd Thursday is the one right before NEMBAfest and I will be unavailable to lead so I'll probably be picking a different date for that one. I'll do that soon and get it posted.

Until then get out and ride!Kevinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11993229765877431764noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4595710086709773157.post-70656880254825162112016-05-06T09:26:00.000-04:002016-05-06T09:26:44.720-04:00Plans for 2016Hey All!

A bunch of us got together yesterday evening for a ride and meeting to try and map out our Summer schedule of trail work and events and I figured I would provide an Executive Summary / recap of what 2016 is looking like in CNH

Trail Days:

May 22 - Franklin Falls: mostly maintenance work, de-rooting and a few possible small re-routes on Bee Trail and Stump

June 5th - Page Hill: main project will be an extension of Bug Out that will bring you up to Hydra on singletrack as opposed to Access Rd. doubletrack.

Aug 6th - Elm Brook: prep trails for the Pedaling for Payson event as well as possibly build a new trail.

Aug 21st - Ahern: building a new trail that has been approved by the State.

We may also add some work days in the Fall and these dates could wiggle a bit (but hopefully not). As always keep an eye on our Events Page for the latest. We'll also be sending out reminders as we get closer.

Social Rides:

We are changing strategy with our Social Rides for this year. Less frequent but in exchange much more production value. We are taking our weekly Thursday ride and turning it into a monthly, much bigger, social event.

On the 3rd Thurs of each month we will have a ride / cookout at one of our local ride locations. Bikes, burgers, adult sodas...everything that we all love.

To kick things off we will be at Franklin Falls on May 19th. Tell your friends, bring the family these are going to be fun!

New Ride Spots(?):

There is also some growing potential for new trails in the Meredith area as well as some new stuff down by Concord. Talks are ongoing and things are in the very early stages but we are hopeful.Kevinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11993229765877431764noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4595710086709773157.post-52208404377549941732015-12-14T09:37:00.004-05:002015-12-14T09:37:56.762-05:00NH State Parks Ahern VideoNH State Parks recently shot a mountain bike promotional video at Ahern State Park. Luckily we had just leaf blown all of the trails and the video looks great!

We got a nice thank you in a tweet from NHStateParks for all of our maintenance work over the years. Word on the street is the leaf blowing is holding up and the trails are still clear. Get out and ride while you still can! Be on the lookout for a bit of rerouting and additional trail work at Ahern next year as well. Always room to improve!

Standard year-end recap and planning for 2016 to be discussed.

Hope to see you there!Kevinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11993229765877431764noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4595710086709773157.post-12785234122049378942015-11-15T16:48:00.001-05:002015-11-15T16:48:44.602-05:00Ahern is Leaf Blown and Ready to GoNot exactly a "Trail Day" but I did manage to run around with my backpack blower and get every trail on State Land blown off and much easier to find. Only section I didn't get was either a section of Connector or Backbone (I forget which is which) over on the Southeast side of the park by Sunset.

Everything is riding really great right now. Appears like after those windy days Friday and Saturday just about all the leaves are down so its a great time to get out and get a few trails cleared off if you have some time. I have a feeling we're going to have a nice extended late Fall / early Winter riding season.

Get out and enjoy it!

If anyone gets any other ride spots blown off update here or shoot me a note so we can keep everyone updated.
Henniker, NH) at 8:00am

We'll be re-decking one bridge and building another. Both work sites are somewhat remote from the trailhead so bringing a bike to ride in would probably be a good idea. We are set for tools so just bring some water and work gloves etc.

Hope to see you there!

There is a new trail at Page Hill called 'Connector' that connects Hydra back up to Hard Hat at about the mid point to allow for slightly easier lapping of Shock Therapy.

The trail gnomes have been VERY busy at Ramblin Vewe and there is a slew of new trails ready to be ridden in. Most of them are on the south side of the property and they offer all kinds of new loop options. Get out there and check them out!

Given the amount of rain that had fallen, it was a little hard to tell if we fixed the wet area, but we didn't make it worse and once things dry out a bit, we think it will be riding much better.

The bad line we worked on was a jump known as "Hankenstein". There have been several reports of riders getting hurt on the jump and we determined that the ramp of the jump was too steep and there was too much of a depression on the approach. This was causing riders to go nose heavy as they hit the end of the jump resulting in some out of control landings.

So we ended up extending the ramp roughly 3 bike lengths back resulting in a much smoother transition and a more progressive jump. None of us brought bikes to test out the newest version of "Hankenstein" because it was so damn crappy out, but we are pretty sure that it is going to work much better now. We also widened the transition area after the jump to make landings safer. Happy riding...
